Dealing with acne? Here’s how to shave safely.
If you deal with acne, shaving can feel like a minefield. One wrong move and suddenly you’re dealing with razor burn, irritated pimples, cuts, or a fresh breakout that definitely wasn’t there five minutes ago.
The good news? You can get a clean, comfortable shave without upsetting your skin. A few small changes to your routine can make a huge difference and you don’t need a 15-step skincare ritual or a cabinet full of expensive products.
Here’s how to shave safely when you have acne-prone skin.
Start With Clean Skin
This sounds obvious, but it matters more than you may realise. Shaving over oil, dirt, or bacteria increases the chance of irritation and clogged pores. Before you even think about shaving, wash your face with a gentle cleanser and warm water.
If your skin is already inflamed, aggressive exfoliation can make things worse, so we recommend skipping the scrub.
Don’t Shave Dry
Dry shaving and acne do not get along. Always use a shaving gel or foam as they create a smooth protective layer between your skin and the blade.
Let the shaving cream sit on your skin for a minute or two before shaving. This softens the hair and helps the razor glide more easily.
Use a Sharp, Clean Razor
A dull razor is one of the fastest ways to irritate acne-prone skin. When blades get old, they tug at the hair instead of cutting cleanly. That means more friction, more inflammation, and a higher chance of accidentally nicking blemishes. After every use, rinse your razor and leave it somewhere to dry so it’s ready for your next shave.
Shave With a Light Touch
One of the biggest mistakes you can make is pressing too hard. You don’t need to scrape your face to get a close shave so let’s take a gentle approach and let the razor do the work.
Our Hydro 5 Sensitive auto-adjusts while shaving. The unique Shock Absorb Technology backs off when too much pressure is applied and adds pressure when needed, letting you customise the balance of contact and pressure for your skin while helping to protect from irritation.
If you have active breakouts, shave carefully around larger pimples instead of going directly over them repeatedly.
Shave With the Grain
Shaving against the direction of hair growth can give an ultra-close shave, but it also increases irritation. So, while you’re dealing with active breakouts, shave in the same direction as your hair grows.
It may not feel quite as smooth immediately afterward, but it’s usually much gentler on the skin and reduces the risk of:
- Razor bumps
- Ingrown hairs
- Inflamed breakouts
Rinse With Cool Water Afterwards
Once you’re done shaving, rinse your face with cool water. Not only will this feel great, it also helps calm the skin and remove leftover shaving cream and loose hair. Then gently pat your face dry with a clean towel. Key word here: pat. No need for aggressive rubbing!
Moisturise… Even if You Have Oily Skin
A lot of people skip moisturiser because they’re worried it will make acne worse. But shaving removes some of your skin’s natural protective barrier, and skipping moisturizer can leave your skin more irritated and unbalanced. Use a lightweight, oil-free moisturiser after shaving to help calm and hydrate the skin.
